Style 740 is an 80/20 wool/nylon blend.  Whereas the wool provides significant warmth, the nylon adds strength and durability to the fabric.

The US Navy Peacoat was adopted during the early 20th Century, from Britain’s Royal Navy Reefer Jacket. The Royal Navy's first regulations for uniforms for other ranks were issued in 1857, a century after the regulations for officers and this garment was originally used by Midshipmen (Reefers). These crewmen had to climb the rigging and furl and unfurl, or ‘reef’, the sails of the sailing ships of the era. The jacket was short, to allow ease of movement through the rigging. It had a double-breasted front, which displaced the buttons to each side. This helped reduce the chance of them getting caught on ropes, as the wearer maneuvered the sails. The pockets were often close to vertical, and over the flanks, rather than horizontal and at wrist level. It was made of very heavy wool, in dark Navy blue, with a nap on the face side.

The success of the style is proved by its singularly universal appearance throughout the Navies of Europe. This may account for the US Navy's nomenclature as an Anglicization of the Dutch 'Pijekkat', being a jacket made of 'Pij' (coarse wool) cloth. Conversely, it may be from the shortening of the Belgium Navies term ‘Pilot’s Jacket’ to P. Jacket, then being misspelled/adapted to Pea Coat. The term ‘Pea Jacket’ is reputed to first appear in the Oxford English Dictionary between 1717 and 1723. ‘Pea Coat’ does not appear for another century.

I've wanted a proper, original peacoat for a long time, and the Schott 740 is exactly what I was looking for. I couldn't be happier with it.

For reference, I'm 6'3" (192 cm), weigh around 220 lbs (100 kg), and have a 42" (106 cm) chest. I went with a size 42 in the standard fit, and it fits me perfectly. There's enough room for a regular sweater or a heavier wool sweater underneath without it feeling too bulky.

Shipping to Norway was very fast aswell, it arrived in just 2 days.

The coat arrived in perfect condition, with a neat hanger and the fit was exactly what I had hoped for.

One of my favorite features is the large, heavy collar. It can easily be adjusted to cover the neck and lover part of my face, and gives decent protection against the wind, snow and light rain.

As a Norwegian, I can comfortably wear it throughout the fall and the cold winter, and the timeless design makes it just as stylish as it is practical.

Couldn't be more satisfied with my purchase. Highly recommended!

I would like to begin this review by stating how much I adore the 740 Peacoat. I like it so much, that it is my favorite winter coat. I love a heavily insulated coat that also looks beautiful; the Schott 740 Peacoat is that coat. It provides the warmth and comfort you need even in the cold winters of high latitudes such as where I live in the Pacific Northwest. And when the weather warms up or when you enter a warm vehicle or building, it is so easy to unbutton and remove this coat. When wearing this coat, I find myself so warm that I almost never need to wear a mid layer in the middle of winter with perhaps only needing a mid layer for those times while in a stationary position outside in the cold when I'm not moving much.

Now that I have demonstrated my adoration of the 740 Peacoat, I would like to provide feedback on the improvements I would like to see that would make this coat even better. My only negative comment about this coat is that the current color selection that this peacoat is offered in is not very “fun." For example, I purchased this peacoat in the color, “new navy," but I am not able to purchase this coat in much different colors than two variants of grey, black and two variants of a navy color. A more complete color selection for this peacoat would include shades of red, burgundy, beige, camel and grey. It is possible to find this peacoat in different colors from third party sellers like eBay, but these “vintage” peacoats manufactured decades ago in the 1980s to 1990s are becoming harder to come by. I would love to see the 740 Peacoat be available in more colors. I suggest that Schott replaces their two variants of grey and navy, which variants are so similar and hardly much different anyway, with shades of red, burgundy, beige, or camel. Thank you.

The quality and fit of the coat is excellent. Just what I wanted in a peacoat. I'm really pleased I found your company. I still have my first peacoat, issued by the US Navy to a skinny kid from Kansas in 1968. I can still button it up, I just can't breathe. The new coat is every bit as good. I'm looking forward to this winter season.

Note: It really should have a spare button attached to the inner liner, my old one does.

I got this for my son’s birthday and he absolutely love it. It is exactly what he wanted. The size chart estimate was spot on and it fits him like a glove. He is looking forward to getting many years of use out of it. Highly recommend this company and jacket.

The in-store experience was impressive. I went in looking for the traditional peacoat that put them on the map and found it in the color and size I wanted. Quality is top-notch.

This jacket is simply amazing. However, I had to return mine due to the size. It runs a bit big; I ordered a size 40, but it fits more like a 42 or 44. I'll be exchanging it for a slim-fit jacket instead. The quality is truly unparalleled.

My son is over the moon with his peacoat. High quality, great features, even more than we hoped for (and he even loves the enclosed stickers too). Well done Schott.

The quality and attention to design of my jacket was excellent. I also like the fact that it was delivered on a hanger. One thing I didn't like is the sleeves are too long for my female frame. I am going to cuff the sleeves and wear it as a fashion choice - that is what the jacket means to me. When I am done, I am giving to my son who was in the navy. He is going to love his Mom!

When I lived in NYC I owned a peacoat so I know how beneficial they can be during the winter. It will be perfect for the chilly Irish weather. It also looks good. The coat I purchased from your company is made from high-quality wool. I ordered it on Wednesday afternoon and it arrived here in Dublin on Friday morning - really great service. Thank you.

Super-chuffed with your 740N Peajacket. Very robust quality feeling material which feels superior to other reefers. Followed the digital size guide which advised a 44, ordered a 44 and it fits perfect. Not too fitted but not boxy and hanging off me. Trialled it with a thick woolen jumper and it fits fine. Feels like it will last a long while. You get what you pay for! Ordered it direct from the USA and even with the customs fees etc it fairs very competitively with the other top-end reefers in the UK. Well done Schott

It's a bit too baggy of a fit but it seems like good material. It would just be nice to be able to have it fit more to size

I’m pretty in love with mine. Thought about getting the 764 but it’s not worth it when you do the math. 740 is 80/20 32oz, 764 is 100% 28oz. The math is 80/20 has about 25oz wool 6oz nylon. The extra 3oz of wool wasn’t worth the extra $195 which is an 43% increase in cost. Plus the 80/20 is more durable, longer, heavier, and has the quilted liner that the 764 doesn’t have. If you’re a purist and you just want 100% to be able to say you have it then the 764 is for you. If you ask me you’re getting a better deal with the 740 as far as price and performance. Lesser price doesn’t mean lesser quality. They’re same quality

First time I buy something from Schott. I love the jacket. Really well made. I'm 6,6 tall and weight 214 lb. The 44L fits perfect (body and sleeves). I have one from Private White and other from Billy Reid and this one fits me better.

It looks fantastic but feels lighter than the exact one I got from you all 25 years ago. In that time I think the materials have updated . I do like the feel of the heavier jacket from before, but the lines on this new one look a bit more aesthetic and sleek.Another winner, thank you.
